A super-easy switch to help reduce single-use plastic in your kitchen.
Swap from buying milk from the supermarket in single-use plastic bottles to getting your milk delivered in glass bottles which the milk man will collect and re-use.
Go from this:
Getting your milk delivered in glass bottles is better than recycling the plastic bottle and here’s why:
When plastics go for recycling they are actually down-cycled, your plastic milk bottle will never become another milk bottle, it will become a lower grade of plastic and so everytime we recycle a milk bottle we still require virgin plastic as raw material for the next plastic milk bottle.
The glass that your milkman uses will be reused over and over and over again until it breaks; glass has a very long working life compared to a single-use plastic bottle.
The only disposable piece of packaging is the aluminium foil tops that the cover the glass bottles, I can recycle these at my local supermarket and some UK councils will actually accept them in your recycling wheelie bin for curb-side collection.
The photo below illustrates the amount of material saved by replacing the plastic bottle with the glass alternative:
To make a swap like this in the UK its as easy as going to www.milkandmore.co.uk and signing up for an account. You can put in your postcode and the site will find your local milkman, of course if you know your local milkman then you could contact them directly to make an enquiry.
We use this service and it is great, you order online & pay online, you can set up regular deliveries for whichever day of the week that you want your milk to arrive and your milk arrives on the day that you are expecting it.
When you have finished the milk, simply rinse out the bottles and put them infront of your house in the same location that they were dropped off (or at least so they will be visible) and the milkman will collect when your next order is delivered.
I love getting my milk delivered, it reminds me of my childhood and makes me feel awesome about eliminating another piece of single-use plastic from my home.
